April is NC Beer Month

Beer Babes and Friends,

April is officially NC Beer Month, and we have partnered with a lot of different groups to bring some truly awesome events into the Charlotte Beer Babes’ hands in celebration of this month of NC Beer. See all their events here as well.

For anyone who saw the Pink Boots Society Ladies Brew items in March, we will be going to Legion Brewing and NoDa Brewing for the releases of the beers we collectively helped to make! The style of Big Boots Brew this year was a Gosé [pron: go-seh] (flavors include lemon, herbs, and salt, are not hoppy, and are 4-5% ABV.). The NoDa version, Girls Gosé Wild with Cucumber, and the Legion version, Girls Gosé Wild with Hibiscus, will both be released exclusively in their own breweries on Monday, April 4. Then on Tuesday, April 5, you can get both beers at both breweries to sample! RSVP for April 5 to NoDa on Meetup and Facebook.

On Wednesday, April 6, we will be doing a Tap Takeover with Sara from Artisan Beverage Group [local distributor] at Growler USA [Ballantyne]! We will have our event from 5-10pm, however this deal is an all-day, for everyone kind of thing! We will be doing a 5-sample flight “Summer Sippers” for $10, with $1 off subsequent pint/growlers of those 5 beers [all day]. We also will get to hear Sara talk about these beers and their styles at 7:30pm for a semi-informal class! RSVP on Meetup and Facebook.

If you’re interested in a charity/brunch opportunity to kick off the month, Hope Is Brewing will be on Saturday, April 9, from 10am-1pm as a ticketed event benefiting Love146, a non-profit working to end child trafficking and exploitation. This event is being held at C3 Labs (2525 Distribution Street, 28203).

We will be doing our monthly Second Saturday Beer Education on Saturday, April 9, at The Beer Growler-Charlotte from 1-4pm. Class will be on the style of IPAs! This is a $12 class that includes 5 different samples of beers in this style. RSVP on Meetup or Facebook.

We will be doing a two part volunteer event with Girls On The Run Charlotte!
APRIL 23:
– We will be volunteering or walking/running in the Saturday, April 23rd, South Charlotte 5K. Volunteers RSVP to my email. To run/walk, sign up on the 5K site. Then heading to brunch & drinks at Mac’s Speed Shop (Ayrsley) from 11:30am-2pm. RSVP to Mac’s on Meetup or Facebook.
APRIL 30:
– We’ll be repeating all of the volunteering or walking/running fun on Saturday, April 30, for the North Charlotte 5K. Volunteers RSVP to my email. To run/walk, sign up on the 5K site. We will then head to brunch & drinks at Duckworth’s Huntersville from 11:30am-2pm. RSVP to Duckworth’s on Meetup or Facebook.
Volunteers for either 5K race day, please email me at charlottebeerbabes@yahoo.com to confirm, with your name and cell phone information. Volunteers will be working from 6:30am-10:30am (for either/both 5Ks). This is open to everyone, but we’d love to have a group of ladies out to support the Girls On The Run, of course!!

We will be going to Three Spirits Brewing for our Last Wednesday Brewery Visit on Wednesday, April 27, from 6-8pm. RSVP on Meetup or Facebook.

We will be doing a Meet The Brewers beer education event with Birdsong Brewing on a date still TBD at Birdsong Brewing Company. Cost will likely be $15 and includes a tasting and education session of 5 beers with the brewers of Birdsong! Stay tuned to RSVP once we finalize the day and time information!

We will be doing a Sour Beer Bottle Share at Carolina Beer Temple on a date still TBD, but likely on Sunday, April 24th, in the afternoon. For all of you unfamiliar, a bottle share is when everyone brings (or in this case buys) a different beer to share with the larger group. Everyone takes 1-3 oz samples (depending on the size of the bottle) so that everyone is literally trying a taste of everything. Typically, for a group of 10, you might see 13-14 bottles shared (between 12oz and 22oz sizes). The goal is to share what you like, or want to try out, with others. This also works out great to try a beer that you maybe wouldn’t drink ALL of but want to try nonetheless! So come join us for the Sour Beer Fun once we finalize the day and time!

Looking forward to a busy and fun April with all of you!

Slainté,
Bethany

Heya Babes!

Well, I got interviewed recently by two different local publications as being the leader of the Charlotte Beer Babes, and thought I’d share them here to give everyone some background on me and the group!

Enjoy and let me know what you think! Both of the writers & the photographer are Charlotte Beer Babes themselves, and do amazing work all the time!

Bonus, answer the trivia question for Gravity, and get entered to win a Gravity swag collection!

Super geeked and really stoked for these next two months for our activities AND these awesome articles!

Check out our Meetup and Facebook pages for updated events coming up, and we’ll see you out around Charlotte hopefully for some fun craft beer times!

March Roars In….

Hey Beer Babes and Friends!

We are going to have a really busy March, and I am super stoked for it!

Thanks to everyone who has come out for our 2016 events thus far, especially our Raleigh Bus Trip last weekend, and I cannot wait until we get into all of the fun of March next week!

First off, we have partnered in the planning of some beer events with the UNC-Charlotte Atkins Library staff, one of whom is a Charlotte Beer Babe! Pam has worked hard with a team at the school to get 3 events (one already happened) to go in conjunction with the traveling exhibit From DNA To Beer. The exhibit is going through the campus until March 20th.

The Kombucha Talks event was Thursday, February 25, with Lenny Boy Brewing owner Townes Mowzer giving the talk. The Homebrew 101 event (Facebook or Meetup) is Wednesday, March 2, with House of Brews owner Heather Lewis giving the tutorial. Finally, the Legion Brewing Visit event (Facebook or Meetup) is the final outside event, where on March 9, everyone will be traveling to Legion Brewing for a tasting & tour event at the brewery!

Next up, we have a busy ladies-only weekend March 12-13 with three events! We are partnering up with a bunch of lady brew reps for a ridiculous amazing day on Saturday, March 12! We are starting off at The Liberty for the 2016 Beer Babes Brunch (Facebook or Meetup) with beer cocktails from 3 breweries paired with a 3-course meal for $35. After that, starting from The Liberty, we’ll be joining more lady brew reps for the Lumber Ladies Bar Crawl 2.0 (Facebook or Meetup)! This will be traversing from The Liberty over to CRAFT Tasting Room, Brass Tap Charlotte, and finally Helles & Dunkel!

Then on Sunday, March 13th, we will be having our Second SUNDAY Beer Education on International Beers at The Beer Growler-Charlotte (Facebook or Meetup)! We normally do this class on Saturdays for $12 for 5 samples of beer, but because International beers are a specialty, we will be doing $15 for 5 samples of beer. I am trying to do once a quarter on Sundays, since some of yall can’t do Saturdays, so this is our first quarter Sunday!

As if all of this isn’t enough, we’ll be doing another partnered event on Sunday, March 20, with (and at) The Unknown Brewing Company: Craft Chicks Hustle Harder 2 (Facebook or Meetup). This event was done in 2014 and we finally got our stars aligned to repeat it! We will have the event open to everyone, it will cost $10 at the door (gets you 1 pint plus entry), and there will basically be a mini-expo of Women In Crafts. From homebrewers to artisans to cheese makers to premier hair stylists to arts & crafters – we will have a lot of lady entrepreneurs represented across a variety of fields! Radio Lola will be providing the female-fronted tunes, and we will also have Two Chicks and A Truck providing for-purchase food! Lots of free samples and for-purchase items to be had, and this IS open to everyone to attend! BONUS: part of the proceeds will be going to Safe Alliance!

Our last event of the month is actually a Facebook only event, merely because it’s not one that I actually am running. Every year, we do a push to help out JDRF with guest bartending. For the third year in a row, I will be a Charity Guest Bartender at Grapevine Wine Shop – Riverwalk (new location!) to help raise money (all the tips!) for this great charity! Sign up for the event here or just show up Wednesday, March 30, from 5-10pm! TIP BIG people, TIP BIG! 😉

Now, normally, we would do a Last Tuesday Brewery Visit, but since we were going to do Legion Brewing, I am hoping to see everyone out there on Wed 3/9 for the Legion Brewing Visit (Facebook or Meetup) with UNC-Charlotte! Rumor has it, if we get a large enough crowd, they’re going to give us a discount! So let’s show up and have a blast ladies! This visit is also open to everyone, not just the ladies! 😉 Come on out with us gents!

Alright, so I’m exhausted and exhilarated just planning and typing this stuff – so I cannot wait to see everyone out at an event this month! If you have any suggestions, requests, comments or concerns – please feel free to reach out to me on this blog, or email me at charlottebeerbabes@yahoo.com.

Thanks for stopping by, and Happy March everyone!

Slainté, Prost, Cheers & Salut!

2015: A Year In Review

Hello Charlotte Beer Babes & Friends!

Another year is done, another year of enjoying craft beer, local spots, and 42 events with a host of amazing ladies & friends!

Yes, we did 42 events in 2015! We volunteered, learned about beer, explored local spots, road tripped, toured breweries, paired beer with food, brewed beer, drank, and laughed A LOT!

This was a heck of a year Babes!

We had 12 Second Saturday events, visited 14 Breweries, 9 Fundraising/Volunteering events supporting 14 different charities, and did 15 one-off events! Whew!

We had the following count of events per month: January (3); February (3); March (7); April (3); May (6); June (4); August (1); September (1); October (6); November (3); and December (3).

We learned about these styles of beer at the monthly Education Class at The Beer Growler Charlotte: Stouts, Reds & Aphrodisiacs, IPAs, Brown Ales, Saisons, Session Ales, Wheats & Hefeweizens, “Flavored” Beers, Oktoberfest Beers, Pumpkin Ales, and Sours!

We visited these breweries: Sugar Creek Brewing, Barking Duck Brewery, Olde Hickory Brewing, Catawba Brewing Company, Fonta Flora Brewing, Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (new location), Triple C Brewing, Birdsong Brewing (new location), Heist Brewery, Lenny Boy Brewing, Wooden Robot Brewery, Free Range Brewing, Red Clay Ciderworks, and Sycamore Brewing!

We also helped to raise a LOT of money for charities this year – both by helping to volunteer with events that give money to charities, and by doing our own events!
QCBF Volunteering benefiting ACEing Autism: $4000 from raffle
Power Hour for JDRF: $1085 from tips (including from CBBs!)
NC Brewers & Music Festival Volunteering: benefits Rural Hill
SouthEnd Hops Festival
: benefited Chronic Illness Relief Fund in 2015!
17th Annual Charlotte Oktoberfest Volunteering: $50,000 donated to Ada Jenkins Center, Beds For Kids, Greater Charlotte SPCA, Operation Homefront-Carolinas
Carolina Raptor Center Jewelry Fundraiser: $135 donated by CBBs!
Funkonia Sour Fest Volunteering: benefiting Arts For Life for 2015!
NoDa Military Fundraiser Wort Share: $400 donated by NoDa Brewing & CBBs to support Patriot Charities & Operation Homefront-Carolinas!
CBB’s 4th Anniversary Party: $200 donated to Safe Alliance & The Butterfly Project

All in all, we helped events that donated or fundraised ourselves a total of over $58,000 this year for these great charities! Aaaamazing working all of these events this year!

Finally, we did 16 one-off events this year! We went on a road trip to Morganton & Hickory; did a Night of Nerdisms and saw a women-centric local play; did a specialized beer cocktail & food pairing brunch; did a Ladies Bar Crawl; saw a hockey game; learned about Beer Photography with Eric; Brewed Beer in teams with Lady HomeBrewers & NoDa Brewing; Showcased the Lemon Drop Hop in the AHA Hop Showcase; went to a lot of beer festivals; did a mixer with another local group; did a Beer & Wine Conversion Class with Mike of Brawley’s Beverages; went to the Renaissance Festival for BrewFest; did a Fullsteam & Fūd at Salud dinner pairing, and had our 4th Anniversary Party including a Yoga & Self-Defense Class as fundraisers!

Whew! That was quite a year ladies (& gents for some of those too)! Thank you all for helping me make this year a continuation of the success of 2014! Thank you to everyone who came out for any of the events, donated to any of the charities/fundraisers, attended any of the local beer festivals, and had fun with us!

I am so proud of everything we did in 2015 and am already planning a plethora of events (repeat and new) for 2016!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year, meeting new people this year, and getting a bigger and better showing for 2016 to make it our best year yet!

Slainté,
Bethany

2015 – The EOY Events

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to drop a line to explain a few of our upcoming events through year-end! Thank you all for being part of this group, whether in person or just online, for another amazing year! Sorry I’ve been slack on this site, but keeping up with every other area of social media became a bit much! 😉

Second Saturday Monthly Beer Education:
We just had our Stouts Class at The Beer Growler, so we only have one more monthly style class – and it will be Sours! I’m confirming Saturday, December 12th still works for The Beer Growler, but as long as they don’t have a special event, we will be good to go on Sours on 12/12 from 1-4pm! NOTE: This class will be $15 instead of $12, due to beer costs.

Last Tuesday Brewery Visits:
For October we went to Free Range Brewery on Halloween and had a blast! For November, with Thanksgiving being the “Last Week” for everything, we’re actually going to combine our Brewery Visit with our Animal Fundraising – this weekend (11/22) at Red Clay Ciderworks! For December, with Christmas/Hanukah/New Years, we’ll be combining our Brewery Visit with our 4th Anniversary Party – at Sycamore on 12/20!
Red Clay Ciderworks – 11/22 – Carolina Raptor Center Fundraiser – 3pm-6pm
Sycamore Brewing – 12/20 – 4th Anniversary Party – 11am-6pm

One Off Beer/Education Events:
12/5 Wort Share: We are doing a homebrewing education fundraiser at NoDa Brewing on 12/5 from 9am-3pm where we will be brewing Ramble On Red on the brewery’s system with Head Brewer Chad, which we then get to take 2.5gal or 5gal of wort (beer minus yeast) home! All of the associated wort costs ($20/$40) are being donated to Military Charities Operation Homefront-Carolinas and Patriot Charities. RSVP: http://evite.me/wKMYPUfT5m
12/20 4th Anniversary: We will be doing a huge party, fundraising and raising awareness for women’s issues, as well as enjoying the heck out of local craft beer from 11am-6pm! JOIN US!
TBD: We will be doing a Coffee & Beer Pairing Class, likely in January, but keep an eye out!
TBD: We will be doing a Cicerone Class (learn how to taste beer). Details coming.
Save The 2016 Date: Craft Chicks Hustle Harder 2 at Unknown Brewing on 01/16/16!
Save The 2016 Date: February 20-21 Raleigh Craft Beer Road Trip! Details Coming.

Fundraising Events:
Animals 11/22
– Carolina Raptor Center – This fundraiser is at Red Clay Ciderworks from 3-6pm, and fundraising will done with a tip jar at our table AND from 30% of all proceeds from Origami Owl jewelry purchases made through Lauren: https://charmedbylaur…[/url].
Military 12/5 – Operation Homefront-Carolinas / Patriot Charities – The above Wort Share event, which will be $20 for 2.5 gallons or $40 for 5 gallons of Ramble On Red Wort, is a combo military fundraiser AND homebrew education event! This event is open to LADIES and MILITARY ONLY until 11/27. If we still haven’t hit 45 people, then we’ll be allowing ANYONE to participate in this awesome event! 🙂 Sign up here as well as the meetup, pretty please, so we can get accurate counts between all social media event signups, as we need 15 minimum and can only have 45 maximum participate! http://evite.me/wKMYPUfT5m
Military 12/13 – Operation Homefront-Carolinas / Patriot Charities – We will be doing a military fundraiser at Sugar Creek Brewing on 12/13. More Details to come!
Womens Issues 12/20 – Safe Alliance / Butterfly Home (Nepal) – We will be doing our 4th Anniversary Party at Sycamore Brewing on Sunday, 12/20. I am still working out details, but these two charities will be our beneficiaries, and we’ll be doing 11am and 11:30am classes on yoga and self-defense for $10 each – with 100% of that going to the charities! We’ll then hang out, with tip jars for donations, and enjoy Sycamore brews all day! This will include a brewery tour! All are welcome, but priority for the classes will be to women if there is a head count issue!

January with the Beer Babes

Hey Charlotte Beer Babes!

We’re gearing up to kick off a strong 2015, and we’re starting it off with our two monthly series events: Second Saturday Beer Education & Tasting, and Last Tuesday Brewery Visit.

Starting us off in true Beer Babes style, we will be going to our new Second Saturday home of The Beer Growler Charlotte (located across South Blvd from World of Beer Southend) for a $12 beer education and tasting class where we’ll focus on Stouts (and sample 6 of this lovely style) on Saturday, January 10, at 1pm! If you love stouts, have been afraid to tackle them, or just aren’t sure if you really have tried ones to accurately determine if your palate enjoys stouts – come out for this class and give them a taste! Sign up via our Facebook or Meetup events. Note: We try to keep this class ladies only, so thanks for understanding gents!

To continue our January, we’ll be heading on the Last Tuesday (January 27) over to check out new-Charlotte brewery Sugar Creek Brewing, starting at 6pm. This is one of the newer breweries to Charlotte, and these guys took over the former location of The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. They are brewing lots of tasty drinks for us to try with a complete focus on Belgian-inspired beers! We’ll get meet starting at 6pm, go on a brewery tour at 7pm, and then hang out until they close at 9pm with pints or flights of their Belgian creations! Come join us for the fun – sign up via our Facebook or Meetup events! Gents, you’re welcome to come hang out at the brewery, but the tour will just be for the ladies!

Reminder to the ladies: if you’re on Facebook, we just added a Facebook Group here to try to make it more efficient to invite us all via Facebook when new events are posted! Make sure you add yourself & your beer curious-or-loving lady friends to the group to keep updated on the Beer Babe fun around town!!!

HAPPY 2015!!!
Cheers, Slainté, Salut, Prost,
